Carole Hayman is a writer, producer & film maker. She was born in Kent, which has featured in her trilogy of novels, "The Warfleet Chronicles". After graduating from Leeds University and the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, her early work was with The Bristol Old Vic, The Royal Court and Traverse Theatres, from which she went on to become a founder member and first woman director of the Joint Stock Theatre Company. She was an Associate Director of The Royal Court Theatre, for which she directed many World Premieres. Carole writes for radio, television and film. On radio, she is well known as co-writer of the Radio 4 hit series "Ladies of Letters" with Prunella Scales and Patricia Routledge, which has run for eleven series. The latest series, LADIES OF LETTERS GO CRACKERS, was a BBC Radio 4 Christmas special and was broadcast from December 27th 2010. LADIES OF LETTERS was produced for TV by Tiger Aspect with Maureen Lipman and Anne Reid and ran for three series on ITV3, repeated successfully on ITV 1. BBC Worldwide publish al the Ladies of Letters audio-books and is in hard copy and e-book from Proin, and DVD by 2Entertain. Carole's original TV dra,a series RIDES, about an all-female taxicab company, ran on BBC1. Her comedy THE REFUGE, ran on Channel 4. A new radio play, THE PAGE OF WANDS (from The Warfleet Chronicles) was recently broadcast on Radio 4. "Ladies of Letters Say No" aired on Radio 4 in August 2007 , another is in development. BBC Worldwide publish all the Ladies of Letters books and audio-books very successfully. Carole has published and broadcast many short stories and pieces of cultural journalism, including features for the Independent, the Guardian, the Express, The Sunday Times, The Mail and a regular column for The Saturday Independent, "My Lofty Life". Her first film as Producer/Writer " f2point8" was made with support from the UK Film Council, was short listed for a BAFTA, and has shown at festivals round the world. "Lofty Life" a short animated film, was completed in 2005 also with an award from the UK Film Council . It has appeared in film festivals world wide, including the LA Film Festival , Raindance , Clermont Ferrand, Positano, Dublin, Leeds, Cambridge and Reading. It can currently be viewed on youtube and other websites. NO ONE ESCAPES - a four-screen film installation on the subject of women and killing, was seen at The Brighton Festival in 2007 and will shortly be screened in London. Carole's most recent novel is the political satire, Hard Choices. Hard Choices was published in July 2003 by Aurora Metro Press and immediately short-listed for The Silver Booker. It came out in paperback in 2004. Carole has also completed a new crime fiction novel. " This is New Labour's 2084. Everyone should read it so that we can make sure it doesn't get this bad." Carole has been an Arts & Humanities Research Council Fellow @ Kings College London and sits on the board of New Writing South, where she runs regular Literary Salons, workshops and seminars on the craft of writing.
