Carmel Morgan

Carmel grew up in a spam coloured council bungalow near Oxford. She graduated from Christ's & Notre Dame College, Liverpool in 1987. She spent ten years as a press officer in theatre and television, but longed to become a writer. After many years of idle optimism, she finally began writing full-time in 1999, serving an invaluable apprenticeship on the second series of THE ROYLE FAMILY (Granada TV for BBC1). In July of that year she landed her dream job when her trial script for BROOKSIDE (Mersey TV for Channel 4) was given the thumbs up. She went on to write over forty episodes of the Liverpool based soap before joining CORONATION STREET (ITV Granada) in 2002.

Still a regular Corrie writer, she took time out to pen an episode of Paul Abbott's SHAMELESS (Company Pictures for Channel 4) and, more recently, to write a stage play for Dawn French and Alison Moyet. Entitled SMALLER, it toured for six weeks at the beginning of 2006 before an extended run in the West End. Carmel co-created (with Cheryl Taylor) DROP DEAD GORGEOUS, a comedy drama centred on an ordinary family's bruising encounter with fame. Made by Hat Trick North for BBC3, the second series was broadcast in the autumn of 2007. The series won a Broadcast Award for Best Multi-Channel Programme and was critically acclaimed; the Guardian called is “a heart-felt and dazzling drama.”

Carmel lives in her adopted hometown of Liverpool.
