Based around the fictitious diary of 1914 18 British officer, the book paints a convincing portrait of life on the Western Front and in the Dardanelles It focuses on two ill fated attacks, at Loos, and at Gallipoli Two things prevent me from awarding 5 stars here, firstly there are many military abbreviations with no glossary to explain them Second there are lots of minor errors missing words mainly but also the odd homo

  2. says:

Solid read Quite entertainingThis novel tracks quite nicely with the history of the BEF, and helps humanize the rather cold impersonal narrative we are used to hearing The book highlights leadership failures and the fog of war which was made all the worse by wretched communication systems.
